STATEMENT ON COURT BATTLE WITH OUT OF STATE
SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS SUING TO REJECT PROPOSITION 305
December 1, 2017
Phoenix - Attorneys for Save Our Schools Arizona, the grassroots group responsible for referring Proposition 305 - universal voucher expansion - to the November 2018 ballot appeared in Maricopa County Superior Court to urge the dismissal of a lawsuit backed by out of state special interest groups Americans for Prosperity and the American Federation for Children.
The purpose of the hearing was to consider Save Our Schools Arizona's Motion to Dismiss all or some of the claims asserted in the lawsuit, which attack the work and the voices of thousands of Arizonans taking a stand for public schools and against the coalition of dark money pro-voucher groups.
"Today's hearing re-affirmed that while SOS AZ is fighting for the right of Arizona voters to have our say on the ballot, these out of state dark money groups are doing nothing more than fighting against the will of the people," said Beth Lewis, SOS AZ chairperson.
"Our work to educate and mobilize voters continues. Since the governor and legislature have chosen handouts for the wealthy over the economic security, workforce development, and quality of life created by a strong public school system, we have no choice but to be the advocates Arizona deserves," said Dawn Penich-Thacker, SOS AZ Communications Director.
A written ruling on the lawsuit is expected in the weeks to come.
