SOSAZ Voting Recommendations for Propositions

We recommend NO votes on legislative referrals: The extremist Republican majority running the Arizona legislature has placed a host of anti-democratic measures on the ballot to limit voters’ rights and give politicians more power. We are recommending a NO vote on all of these dangerous measures, including Propositions 133, 134, 135, 136, 137, 312, 314, and 315.
We recommend a NO vote on Proposition 140 (Make Elections Fair). We agree that Arizona’s primary system needs reform; however, Proposition 140 is flawed for several reasons. First, it gives too much power to politicians who have no incentive to “make elections fair.” These politicians would be allowed to decide how many candidates could advance from the primary to the general election in many races — and if lawmakers fail to act, the Secretary of State would single-handedly decide. Because Arizona’s elections are so volatile, this is shortsighted and prone to disaster. While well-intentioned, this measure has the potential to negatively impact elections for decades to come.
We recommend a YES vote on Proposition 139 (Arizona Abortion Access), which protects women’s right to reproductive freedom and protects women’s health. As a woman-led organization fighting for all Arizona educators and students, the majority of which are female, we feel it is incumbent on us to support this measure.
